While working on this piece and contemplating possible titles, Pink Floyd’s song Time came on (from which I borrowed a line). It’s a cautionary tale about squandered youth and the relentless advance of age, and it spoke to me as an appropriate metaphor for this piece, which captures a delicate moment in the life of a young girl on her life’s journey. A magic spell is simply the words we speak and what we believe about ourselves. It is our intention, which becomes the difference between a life of slow decline, or a joyful and ever expanding dance towards our full potential. The scene was further inspired by the figurative works of 19th Century artist, William Adolphe Bouguereau, and by underwater photographer Cheryl Walsh.
